What is the difference between paint and stain?

Paint creates a coat on top of surfaces and can be used on drywall, metal, wood, and other materials. Stains penetrate wood, protecting it and enhancing its appearance. While a layer of paint seals wood, stains allow it to breathe, preventing warping and rotting.

What should I know before buying paint or stain?

When deciding on what type of paint or stain you need, first determine what surface you'll be covering. Make sure you have the right brushes and supplies to get started. For interior paints, you will want a primer and to determine which colour works best for your space. For exterior paints, you'll want to pick the right level of durability and protection, then decide whether or not you will need to seal it.

It's also important to know how much you'll need for the surface you'll cover. A good rule of thumb is 5 litres of paint per 500 square feet. A 3.78 litre can of stain will cover between 150 to 300 square feet.
